Indications
The BerkelBike Impuls is primarily designed for people with a complete upper motor neuron paraplegia.
In case of a complete lower motor neuron lesion (usually under Th12 level), there are no more spinal cord nerve cells left under the lesion level. As a result, the nerves cannot be stimulated any more with a low current, making this category having at present less chance for successful application of FES. Lower motor neuron lesions are characterized by a flaccid paralysis (Cauda equina syndrome), which means that there is no spasm present.
Currently there is a major European research, named RISE, where the application of FES on weakly paralysed muscles is examined. The leadership of this research is aware of the BerkelBike and hopes to combine new stimulation techniques with the BerkelBike in the future.
Where there is doubt about whether or not the nerves are intact, it can be tested by BerkelBike BV.
Contra indications
In the following cases it is possible that FES may not be used:
• Pregnancy
• Severe ischemia of the lower limbs
• Damaged or irritated skin of the buttocks or upper legs
• Serious limited movement amplitude of the ankle, knee or hip joints
In case of doubt, BerkelBike BV in consultation with the treating physician will determine whether there is any contra-indication. In addition, BerkelBike BV has a network of various FES experts at its disposal.
In the United Kingdom, BerkelBike has two dealers (see Contact). The prices in the UK are displayed in document Price list (PDF).
If you’re considering purchasing the Impuls system with your BerkelBike, we strongly advise you to contact BerkelBike BV
